What do I need to do next?

Please contact the surgery reception team either by telephone or via reception and inform them that you have had a positive home pregnancy test. The receptionist will then take contact details for you including your name and telephone number in addition to the approximate number of weeks pregnant you are. Your information will then be passed onto the Community Midwife Team.

Do I need an appointment at the practice to confirm the pregnancy?

No – it is practice policy that you do not need to confirm the pregnancy with a nurse or GP appointment. Home pregnancy testing kits now provide the same level of accuracy as a test provided at the surgery, we therefore do not need to repeat the test at the surgery. However, if you have any pregnancy related problems or concerns you are welcome to book an appointment or speak to a clinician via our navigator appointments system. The practice will be happy to arrange an appointment with a clinician where required.

What happens next?

The midwife will contact you via the telephone to arrange your first antenatal appointment (which is called your booking). The appointment may take place at the surgery or at another venue by mutual arrangement. Please note that there may be a delay before you are contacted by the midwife if you are before 8 weeks gestation as booking appointments may not be arranged before this week.
